Hi Dale,
Here are some thoughts for you.
Did you know the city of Houston maintains more than 100 miles of hike and bike trails? Here are just some of the places you need to check out.
Memorial Park: Dubbed “the largest urban park in Texas,” Houston's Memorial Park, just inside Loop 610 at Woodway, includes Texas’ top-rated municipal 18-hole golf course, as well as facilities for tennis, softball, swimming, track, croquet, volleyball, in-line skating, cycling and a popular three-mile running course.
West End Bicycles is located about a mile from Memorial Park, and they have weekly rides around town. If you enjoy cycling, I'd definitely pay a visit to West End.
Lee and Joe Jamail Skatepark: If you dream of riding bowls, grinding rails, or cutting and sweeping through the largest cradle in the world, you can fulfill your desire right here in Houston at the new Lee and Joe Jamail Skatepark.
Houston Arboretum & Nature Center: Located on the western edge of Memorial Park (4 miles from downtown Houston), the Houston Arboretum & Nature Center is a 155-acre nature sanctuary with 5 miles of hiking trails.
There are great running and cycling trails all along Buffalo Bayou, and you can canoe or kayak there, too. I'd also check their schedule of guided boat tours--it's such a unique way to see the city.
Hermann Park is gorgeous--several of the museums are located there, along with a golf course, Miller Outdoor Theatre and the Zoo.
If you want to head out of the city a little, Armand Bayou Nature Center is incredible.
Do you enjoy fishing? Sport fishing offshore in the Gulf of Mexico and in the inshore waters of the Texas coast is very popular. Catches include tarpon, kingfish, red snapper, wahoo, ling, bonito and yellow-finned tuna. Eighty miles offshore from Galveston is some of the country's best bill fishing, with catches of blue and white marlin and sailfish.
