When my family visits Houston, I take them to Armandos, the Menil Collection, New World Museum and Museum of Fine Arts. Each are enriching and inspiring. I value places that are educational and meaningful.
Houstonians are overwhelmingly friendly and warm. People here welcome travelers and treat transplants like they are old friends. Houston is full of opportunities and gives everyone a chance.
In the morning, I can be found at The Houstonian working out, then eating a light breakfast at The Center Court before reading the paper by the pool. I love having all day to get to work. In the evening, I can be found at my restaurant, Armandos.
My perfect day has no agenda. My wife and I would spend most of the day at the Houstonian working out and reading or maybe stopping by one of our museums if there is a new exhibit. One the way home, we’d stop by Central Market or Whole Foods for a variety of pates, cheeses, sausages and French bread from which I would prepare a picnic. The perfect day would end at dusk enjoying the natural light from the sky light above our bed, enjoying the picnic and watching the History Channel.
My favorite place to eat is a small Korean restaurant, Seoul Garden. They serve wonderful grilled vegetables and meat which are full of flavor and healthy. I really don’t shop. I just had 3 suits custom-made by my long time personal tailor. To fill in my day time wardrobe, I’ll visit thrift stores where I find polo shirts, khaki shorts and slacks and classic navy sports coats. I have four identical jackets that I pair with a crisp shirt and jeans.
Houston's best kept secret is the New World Museum. PBS recently ran a special called Hot Town, Cool City in which they named New World Museum one of Houston’s best kept secrets. New World Museum is devoted to the presentation and interpretation of Hispanic Contemporary Art on a world class level. Chartered in 2000 as the city’s only major Hispanic Museum, New World Museum is one of only a few non-collecting Art Museums in the United States.
I tell everyone, “you better buy property inside the loop before you are priced out of the market.”
