Dr. Bernard Harris
Former NASA Astronaut
Houston was my launching pad to the stars! It is a wonderful city that I have called home for over 20 years. Houston has world class educational institutions that rival other top cities around the nation. I attended the University of Houston, where I received the foundation to become a doctor and eventually an Astronaut. It is the home of the Astronauts, the world’s largest medical center, the energy capital of the world and a diversified array of other industries that makes Houston the place to be. In addition, it is a great city for family… and for just plain good living.
My favorite place to shop is The Galleria, where you can find anything you want. My favorite place to eat is Goode Company BBQ. My favorite place to go out is the movies. I love the fact that many of Hollywood’s top actors and actresses are from Houston.
Houston’s best kept secret is its people. Nowhere else can you find such a diversified population, representing people from all over the World. This provides a culture that is genuinely Texan, but with an international flare. It is the Houstonians that make this city Great!
I have spent the majority of my life right here in Houston. Even though I have traveled all over the World…on the Earth and above it. I always return to the place I call home, Houston.
My most memorable times in Houston have come when I am able share my experiences in space with the young people in Houston. I make it a point to visit schools all over the city, telling my story and encouraging the youth to study hard and to get a good education, particularly asking them to pay special attention to Math and Science. Houston’s future lies in our youth.
For me, Houston has been the center of the universe, for all the reasons that count.
