 Mark Cox
Owner/Executive Chef
Mark's American Cuisine

Houston is the greatest restaurant city in the country.  Houston diners eat out more times a week than diners in any other city, and for good reasons.  Our restaurants are offering more availability and greater quality of food items on their menus.  I find it a treat to have so many new restaurants opening as well as the established favorites.

Some of my personal favorites are Mai’s (Vietnamese/Chinese), Nit Noi (Thai) and Kaneyama (Japanese) for sushi.  Carrabba’s Italian Restaurant on Woodway and Voss is a favorite of mine, and especially my wife, who is Italian.  We never miss Demeris Barbecue whether it be July 4th or just a craving for real Texas barbecue.  Houston’s list of restaurants is endless.

My favorite spots in Houston are Memorial Park for jogging and the Hobby Center for its design and shows.

The diversity of the city itself makes Houston special—what all it has to offer such as the Medical Center and the Arts.  Houston is multicultural.

A perfect day in Houston for me would be riding my motorcycle through the back roads just outside of Houston, spending time with my family and friends and eating out (my break from cooking).

When people visit me from out of town, since I am so restaurant oriented, I would take them to eat barbecue or Mexican food, types of cuisines not available to them where they live.

People most likely would find me working at my restaurant.

Houston and its people have been very kind to me.  I moved to Houston 25 years ago without employment, and if it were not for the Houstonians’ interest in my style of cuisine, Mark’s American Cuisine would not be a successful restaurant.

My restaurant will be celebrating its tenth anniversary July 10, 2007.  I am both proud and humbled to have my restaurant named by Zagat as the number one spot for food in Houston.
