Hobby Airport/Third-Ward Restaurants

The cuisine in Third Ward can be summed up in one word: comforting. No matter what you are eating, each bite tastes like it was prepared with love and care.

Two Houston staples that have been around for about 60 years are Dot Coffee Shop and Houston’s This Is It Soul Food. The former is a 24-hour diner dishing out homemade comfort food, while the latter specializes in hearty soul food like braised oxtails and yams.

No frills BBQ food is easy to come by in Houston, but none do it as well as Houston’s Sparkle’s Hamburgers or Ray’s Real Pit BBQ Shack. Both grill up juicy burgers and more to a consistent line of hungry customers.

For some international flare, Chef Frank Triola’s Café feeds guests health-conscious, Italian meals. And next to the University of Houston campus, Banh Mi Hoang Sandwich Shop has become a popular escape for students looking for that perfectly crisp banh mi sandwich.

Don’t think we forgot about those with a sweet tooth. Third Ward is where That Funnel Cake Place is frying up fresh-baked funnel cakes daily with flavors including deep fried snicker, PBJ and classic cakes with fruit.
