Accommodation...
Submitted by Heather from Canada on 08-16-2014
Question:

For our first visit to Houston can you recommend a specific area to stay? I read that the downtown core pretty much closes up after normal office hours... We will be flying onto George Bush. We like: movie theatres, casual restaurants/pubs, walking trails, views from our hotel, and exploring on foot. Any suggestions will be much appreciated. Thank you... :o))

Answer:

Hi Heather,

Downtown is a great place to stay - I'd recommend Hotel Icon bc it's right next to Market Square Park, which has great restaurants and bars.  Treebeards, Batanga and Barnaby's are good casual dining spots, and OKRA, La Carafe and Bad News Bar are fun nightlife options.  Hotel Icon is also right on the Light Rail, which you can take down to Midtown, the Museum District and Zoo.  There is also a movie theater in downtown called Sundance Cinema - great place for a flick.

If you like walking trails, check out the Buffalo Bayou Walking Trails, or jump in the car for a quick drive over the Arboretum and Memorial Park.

Hope this helps,

Toyota Center Hotels
Submitted by Cherry from Tx on 08-13-2014
Question:

Attending an event at Toyota Center What hotels connect to Toyota Center so you stay inside and walk is reasonable?

Answer:

Hi Cherry,

No hotels actually connect to Toyota Center, but there are several hotels within a few blocks.  I'd recommend you check out the Four Seasons Hotel, Hilton Americas, and Embassy Suites Houston Downtown.  The HIlton Americas connects to the George R. Brown Convention Center, maybe that's what you're thinking of?

Upcoming trip to Houston
Submitted by Sylvain Pesant from Montreal, Canada on 08-13-2014
Question:

Thank you for your prompt reply to our previous message... but your outdoor ice rink skares us a little. What kind of temperature whould we expect in Houston from the 10th to the 13th of December? What kind of clothing should we bring for general outdoor activities? Thank you!

Answer:

Hi Sylvain,

Here is the average temperature for Houston throughout the year - December's high is a balmy 65 degrees fahrenheit.  So, not to worry about the temps being too cold while you're here, Discovery Green just has to artifically freezes the ice rink.

For outdoor activities, I'd wear layers of clothes so you can add layers if you're cold or remove layers when you get warm.

Hope this helps!

Hi Bryan,

There aren't several hotels relatively close to NRG Stadium (formerly Reliant Stadium). Here is a list of properties in near proximity in the NRG Park/Medical Center area.

Question:

We will be in Houston from the 10th to the 13th of December and we are wondering if any special activities fell in this time frame. We also plan to see the night show at the James Turrel Twilight Epiphany Skyspace and we are wondering when it plays, when and where to reserve. Thank you.

Answer:

Hi Sylvain,

Here is our Calendar of Events from 12/10 - 12/13. Be sure to check back often as new events are added everyday.  I'd also suggest Zoo Lights and the ice rink at Discovery Green while you're in town.  The Galleria Shopping Mall also has a 3 story tall Chritmas Tree that makes a fun background to a photo op.  Here is the recap of events during 2013 - we'll create a 2014 round up in the Fall.

Regarding the James Turrell exhibit, you can make reservations here. However, the reservations only go a few weeks out from the current date, so I'd give the exhibit a call to see if you can reserve of the phone: Emily Stein, (713) 348-4758, or by email: ems12@rice.edu.

Hope this helps,

attire
Submitted by Tamara from Jacksonville, FL on 08-11-2014
Question:

Hi. I will be in Houston from 8/21-8/24 and need to know what to wear. I'm a Florida girl and live in sundresses and flip flops. Is that too casual for Houston? I don't want to be such an obvious tourist! Thank you.

Answer:

Hi Tamara,

For walking around and doing some site seeing, that sounds like you're wearing the right thing! If you're going to any fancy restaurants or the theatre, be sure to dress appropriately.

Have fun!

space centre
Submitted by sharonsullivan from queensland on 08-08-2014
Question:

Hi Veronica. We would like to visit the Space Centre on Monday 13th Oct 2014. We are staying at Comfort Suites Galleria. Would it be best to prepurchase our tickets from Australia and how would you suggest we get to the Space Center from our hotel. Appreciate your help, Sharon.

Answer:

Hi Sharon,

Thanks for your question! From the Galleria, Space Center is about  30 miles away and roughly a 45 minute drive. You can either rent a car for the and spend time at both Space Center and Kemah, which is just down the street. The other option would be to take a taxi, which would cost roughly $60.

Also, if you plan on checking out several of Houston's area attractions, I recommend buying a CityPass which will gain you access to multiple attractions at a discounted rate. You can purchase e-tickets anytime. If you choose not to use CityPass, you can purchase tickets to Space Center at any time, including at the time of entry.

Best,
Veronica

Metro Day pass card
Submitted by Adam Kindreich from The Hague, Netherlands on 08-07-2014
Question:

Hello, Can I purchase the Metro Day pass card, that allows free travel for a day for three dollars, at the George Bush airport? If so, where about in the airport? Thanks, Adam.

Answer:

Hi Adam,

There isn't a place to buy a Metro Day pass at the airport.  You can ride the bus into downtown for $1.25 and get a pass at the main metro office (1900 Main Street). Or, if you'll be renting a car, you can get a 3 day pass at any grocery store (Fiesta, Food Town, Kroger, Randalls or HEB).

Hope this helps,

Veronica

Getting to Galveston
Submitted by Linda from Sweden on 08-07-2014
Question:

Hello, What ways are there to get from Downtown Houston to Galveston (not to the cruise terminal)? Regards, Linda

Answer:

Hi Linda,

There are just a couple of ways to get from Downtown Houston to Galveston. Galveston is about 50 miles from downtown and takes about an hour. I would recommend renting a car for the day, otherwise you can take a taxi which will cost roughly $115.

I hope that helps,
Veronica
