The St. Lawrence String Quartet returns with a Houston premiere and masterpieces by Haydn and Beethoven. The new quartet by American master John Adams explores his musical roots in the classical repertoire and the life-changing experience he had as a teenager of attending performances by the Budapest and Juilliard Quartets. Reflecting deeply on his formative years, especially on the power of Beethoven’s late works, Adams bases this new work on what he calls “fractals,” or small fragments, from Beethoven’s last piano sonatas. The St. Lawrence String Quartet is Christopher Costanza, cello; Owen Dalby, violin; Geoff Nuttall, violin; and Lesley Robertson, viola.
