Upper Kirby's venerable Cafe Japon has managed to outlast the onslaught of trendy, new sushi joints joining Houston's restaurant ranks since it first opened in the early '90s.

The affordable spot is popular with neighborhood patrons and college kids, hoping to satisfy cravings for fresh sushi and sashimi. Choose from the well-appointed sushi roll menu or from the dinner menu, the latter of which offers non-sushi eaters plenty of options to enjoy.

Cafe Japon is open until 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday nights.
