Just weeks after closing the chapter on her 10-year-old t’afia, Chef Monica Pope unveiled her new Midtown restaurant concept , Sparrow Bar + Cookshop. In addition to a new name and menu, the space’s interior welcomed an overhaul with the help of the Heights-based Installations Antiques.
Gone is the modern décor that marked t’afia, replaced with a well-balanced mix of inviting rustic-meets-industrial wares. Cement, steel and wood accents blend with distressed brick, soft lighting and natural textiles, giving Sparrow a laid-back, lived-in vibe.
On the moderately-priced, modern American menu, loyal t’afia fans will find a handful of classics carried over from Pope’s previous venture, as well as a solid wine and cocktail line-up. New dishes like lamb sweetbreads, beef tartar with Japanese eggplant and grits with stir-fried okra are all on offer, along with familiar favorites like the shiitake-mushroom dumplings and chorizo-stuffed dates.
Sparrow is open for lunch and dinner, Tuesday through Saturday.
