Higher-end British food can be hard to come by stateside. But leave it to well-known Houston-UK chef Richard Knight to give Htown a premiere British-American culinary adventure in Hunky-Dory Tavern.

Knight, the former Chef-Owner of Feast, the nationally acclaimed nose-to-tail restaurant, teamed with the Treadsack restaurant group (Down House, D&T Drive Inn, Johnny's Gold Brick and Sugar & Rice) for his latest concept. The Michael Hsu-designed restaurant (Uchi, Shake Shack, Oporto) interior features floor-to-ceiling windows, wood-beamed ceilings and tables, and an intimate backyard patio.

Hunky-Dory Tavern, named after the iconic David Bowie album, specializes in unique hearth-cooked classics that are countered with unique rustic creations. Knight offers an assortment of starters like Foie Gras with Lady Arundel's Manchet (foie gras on toasted brioche and fresh fruit jam) or homemade black pudding in a flakey pastry shell.

True to form, Knight’s grandest culinary creations are found in his grilled meat entrees – cooked on a wood-fired hearth exposed in an open kitchen facing the main dining room. Dishes such as Filet Steak au Poivre (Peppercorn topped steak with a creamy cognac finish) and Cake Stand Pork Chops (anchovy honey-glazed grilled chops and rich smaltz stacked like pancakes) round off an extensive dining menu.

Hunky-Dory also offers a full selection of British-style pub food in a separate bar section. From the classic fish and chips to meat pies and a revolving specials board, Knight’s menu is sure to satisfy any homesick Brit. Be sure to try the Silver Salver, an eye-opening cheese tray with housemade chutneys, bread, chilled pies, and relish. Classic British beers and cocktails compliment an extensive wine list.

Happy Hour is served Sunday through Thursday in the pub and patio from 5 pm to 6:30 pm. A weekday lunch service is served Monday-Friday from 11 am.-3 p.m.

Hunky Dory is part of an interconnected restaurant with two distinctly different concepts and linked by a private dining room. While Hunky Dory is British pub-inspired, Bernadine’s offers an oyster bar with the nostalgia of coastal seafood shacks.
