Less than an hour drive from downtown Houston, the Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig and Museum and Education Center on Galveston Island tells the story and evolution of offshore drilling. The museum allows visitors to have a hands on experience with some of the most advanced drilling equipment in the world, most of which is still used in the field today, while learning about the history and influential people that helped pave the way to Houston becoming the petroleum capital of the world.

Start off by boarding the retired jackup drilling rigThe three-story museum features interactive displays, videos, exhibits and scale models of drill bits and remotely-operated vehicles (ROVs). Guests have the option to wonder the spaces freely, purchase a guidebook from the gift shop or an audio tour package. Be sure to walk across the sky walk to experience what it’s like to stand on the drill floor of an offshore rig.

The museum also includes a hall of fame—a nod to past and present offshore drilling pioneers—and a gift shop.
