The Heights

Century-old trees, peaceful walking paths, great shops and dining spots plus a wealth of architectural history comprise the charming Heights neighborhood. This historic district, developed in the 1890s as a peaceful retreat from the big city, flourishes today as a close-in, close-knit community. The well-groomed esplanade along Heights Boulevard offers a scenic 1.5-mile trail for joggers and walkers, with water stations for four-legged friends and a notable World War II Memorial at 11th Street.

The monthly Heights 1st Saturdays bring street fair atmosphere to the sidewalks as local merchants open their doors for great deals in furniture, art, clothing and décor.

Begin with a hearty breakfast at Onion Creek. How about homemade waffles with fresh fruit or toasted pecans? Call it a coffee house, lounge or bar, Onion Creek is a fun place to enjoy food and drinks on the patio day or night.

Start your shopping spree on 19th Street, just west of Heights Boulevard. Make your first stop Bliss on 19th to jumpstart your home design ideas. Next door, experience colorful works from over 50 interchanging artists at Square Moon Gallery. And just down the street the popular art gallery M2 exhibits exceptional artists in an equally awesome space.

Explore antiques galore at Chippendale, Eastlake, Louis & Phyfe and down the street at Heights Theater Antiques, housed in a 1920s movie house.  You can’t help but try on that worn leather jacket or costume brooch; it’s all fun at Retropolis, the vintage clothing store that makes you feel young again.

Looking for Asian pieces? Look no further than Wind Water Gallery, esteemed to be one of Houston’s largest sources of Asian antiques. Peek inside What?, to see displaced New Orleans shop-owner Chris Thayer and furniture maker David Marsh’s mix of one-of-a-kind, eco-friendly furniture made by a variety of fine craftsmen.

Don’t miss a trip to the Art Car Museum, dedicated to exhibiting contemporary art, with an emphasis on art cars.  The museum, or "Garage Mahal," as many people know it, features the most imaginative, elaborate and artfully constructed art cars, low riders and mobile contraptions, as well as art exhibitions by local, regional and national artists. The conceptual origin of the museum was the 1984 Collision Show at Lawndale Art Center, which resulted in Art Car workshops around the city and, eventually, the Art Car Parade, which takes place annually in May.

One of Houston’s most unique attractions, the Aurora Picture Show is a 1924 wooden church building converted into a 100-seat cinema. Through consistently visionary programming, Aurora has achieved a reputation as one of the world’s finest microcinemas. To date, Aurora has hosted over 120 visiting artists and presented over 3,000 films and videos.

For an intimate opera experience, Opera in the Heights is a must.  This regional opera company performs four productions a year in the lovely Lambert Hall, which holds only 300 people.

Hungry? Hickory Hollow’s fork-tender barbecue and Texas-size chicken fried steaks have been voted some of the best around. You may want to settle into the evening with a glass of wine and friendly atmosphere at Shade enjoying Chef Jeb Stuart’s Butternut Squash Risotto. Or enjoy the seasonal menus paired with music and wine at popular bistro Glass Wall.

There’s no need to leave the Heights – stay another day and relax in the warmth of a claw foot tub and four-poster bed. Innkeepers Bob and Connie McCreight can offer you a relaxing night’s stay at their Victorian mansion known as Sara’s Bed & Breakfast Inn

No visit to the Heights would be complete without a driving tour of the historic homes, many of which are located on the National Register of Historic Places. Heights Boulevard, between 10th and 12th Street offer beautiful examples of period craftsmanship. The 1600 to 1800 blocks of Harvard Street, one block east of Heights Boulevard, showcase a variety of classical themes including Arts and Crafts bungalows.
