 Midtown

One of Houston’s trendiest neighborhoods, Midtown sits between downtown Houston and the Museum District. Here, loft-dwellers share vistas of the downtown skyline to the north and a view of the Museum District’s century-old oaks to the south.

The urban, pedestrian-friendly neighborhood is home to young professionals that love the high-rise lifestyle and abundance of great food choices. Breakfast can range from a grab-and-go pastry at Coco’s Crepes & Coffee to a bottomless cup of coffee, katfish and grits and wings and waffles (together, that is!) at the breakfast klub. Lunch-goers love the pizza and the sidewalk atmosphere at family-owned Ponzo’s, while those that can’t get enough Tex-Mex find their way to Tacos A Go Go where a fantastic Carmen Miranda overlooks the entrance. When the lights dim and white tablecloths set the stage, hometowners make their way to Brennan’s, serving Texas Creole at its finest for over 40 years.

On Saturday mornings, rain or shine, Chef Monica Pope hosts Midtown Farmers Market where local farmers and culinary artisans offer the best of their trade. Inside, the award-winning chef takes local produce to a delightful new level with her organic menu at t'afia.

Once hunger pains are satisfied, Midtowners love to enjoy the arts. Check out the area’s impressive group of galleries, theater and contemporary craft. Inman and Finesilver make art-hopping easy, just doorways apart, on the 3900 block of Main. Nearby, gallery owner Sonja Roesch brings European artists to the forefront with their display of color, light and experimentation of materials. Station Museum makes you think and rethink with its edgy one-of-a-kind installations. Artists at Houston Center for Contemporary Craft share their elegant art made of fiber, metal, glass, clay and wood. The Ensemble Theatre, the oldest and largest professional African American theatre in the Southwest, stages stellar seasons year after year.

At Midtown’s Elizabeth Baldwin Park, there’s always time to reflect at the Vietnamese Heritage Plaza, honoring the commitment and achievements of Vietnamese Americans who dared to make their way to this country. And don’t miss what locals know as “flower row” – the colorful, sweet-smelling array of bargain flower shops along Fannin Street.

Peruse the three floors of elegant, modern furnishings at High Fashion Home, or if you desire designer jeans and other casual chic looks, check out Lab 5.

You can take home great blues and jazz on vintage vinyl at Sig’s Lagoon but for the real thing, you’ll have to stay till the sun goes down to check out the nightlife in Midtown, popular spots such as the renowned Continental Club and popular Pub Fiction. And don’t forget Sammy’s with the sweet soulful sounds of its namesake, Sammy Reylford.

METRORail, with its three Midtown rail stations, can take you north to the heart of the nation’s fourth largest city or south to the Texas Medical Center and popular Reliant Park. It’s a smooth ride and a great way to see the sights.
