Mayor Bill White today announced plans for Unity Week Houston 2007. A series of events and cultural exchanges showcasing the diversity of Houston will take place Monday, Aug. 13-Saturday, Aug. 18. As both Mayor White and Council Member Ada Edwards stated during today's press conference, people from different cultures and backgrounds are killing each other around the world every day. Unity Week is a proactive step Houston is taking to bring cultures together instead of driving them apart.

Houston is the nation's demographic future. In racial and ethnic composition, the Houston of today very much resembles the U.S. nearly 60 years hence. No racial or ethnic group constitutes a majority of the Houston region's population, so it's fitting that Houston is the only city in the country to hold this type of diversity celebration.

Cultural Exchange
During the week of Aug. 13, various community centers in Houston will open their doors to patrons of other community centers for a cultural exchange opportunity. The goal of this program is to bring Houston's communities together to learn more about one another. Each community center will be open to the general public after 1 p.m.

Children participating in summer programs at the various community centers will have the opportunity to spend a few hours learning about another culture. For example, kids participating in the Jewish Community Center's summer program will spend Tuesday morning playing games, learning Kung Fu and tasting authentic Chinese cuisine at the Chinese Community Center.

Monday, August 13: The Multi Ethnic Community Center, 9819 Bissonnet St., will open its doors to patrons of other community centers to enjoy activities planned by the center.

Tuesday, August 14: The Chinese Community Center, 9800 Town Park, will share the sights and sounds of the Chinese community in Houston.

Wednesday, August 15: The Jewish Community Center, 5601 Braeswood St., will host an open house in celebration of Jewish culture in Houston.

Thursday, August 16: The Arab-American Cultural and Community Center, 10555 Stancliff Road, will show Houstonians how it works to preserve Arab culture, making it more accessible to the public through language and cultural programs.

Friday, August 17: Ripley House, 4410 Navigation, will showcase Houston's Hispanic Community.
