For the month of December, the Greater Houston Convention and Visitors Bureau (GHCVB) welcomes five conventions, trade shows, events and other meetings to the city. More than 52,800 attendees will spend an estimated $51.4 million in Houston during this month. The following are some of December’s largest conventions:

Philosophical Society of Texas – Annual Meeting
The Philosophical Society of Texas’ 2007 annual meeting will be held at the St. Regis Hotel and the Baker Institute for Public Policy at Rice University Dec. 7-9. This year’s theme for the meeting is U.S. Energy in a Global Context, Playing off Houston’s status as the Energy Capital of the world. The program chairman, Amy Myers Jaffe, Wallace S. Wilson Fellow in Energy Studies at the Baker Institute, has arranged for some very interesting speakers on topics ranging from alternative energy sources and effects on global climate to oil and terrorism. Attendees will hear from a number of experts, including Former Secretary of State James A. Baker, III and John Hofmeister, president of Shell Oil, U.S.A. More than 250 delegates are expected to attend, with an economic impact of approximately $243,500.

Texas Bowl – Annual Bowl Game
The Texas Bowl will be held at Reliant Stadium on Dec. 28. The Texas Bowl is a celebration of the culture, heritage and football tradition of the Lone Star State. Positioned between Christmas and New Year's Day, this new addition to gridiron excitement will capture the attention of football fans in a state that has become synonymous with the game. The celebration starts at 4 p.m. CST with TexFest featuring live Texas music, authentic Texas cuisine, exciting games and both teams' “Spirit Walks” as they enter Reliant Stadium. TexFest is free to the public. Festivities will culminate with the “largest holiday fireworks show in Texas” after the game. Kickoff for the bowl is at 7 p.m. CST. More than 50,000 attendees are anticipated, which will bring approximately $48.7 million to the local economy. Tickets are on sale at www.VisitHoustonTexas.com
