2,000 Meeting Planners Coming to Houston

February 1, 2008

Contact Information:
Name: Lindsey Brown
Phone: 713-437-5275
Email: lbrown@ghcvb.org

WHAT: Meeting Professionals International, the meetings and events industry’s largest community with more than 23,000 members worldwide, is holding its annual Professional Education Conference, entitled MeetDifferent (www.mpimeetdifferent.org), in Houston. More than 2,000 meeting professionals and suppliers, each responsible for multiple meetings and events, will sample our city for four days.

WHEN: Feb. 2-5, 2008

WHERE: George R. Brown Convention Center
The press room (for credentials) is room 216 on the second level.
On-site contact: Bob Tess, (972) 804-6668

WHY: MPI members have booked close to $100 million in business in previous host cities over a three year period after the conference, and the residual business continues to flow. In essence, this is an enormous site visit for meeting planners—Houston’s opportunity to showcase all it has to offer. Additionally, the MPI focus on Houston will expose the city to non-attending members.

VISUALS:
· The opening reception (Saturday, Feb. 2 at 7 p.m., George R. Brown Convention Center, Floor 2) will be the first green event hosted by the GHCVB.
· Mayor White and GHCVB CEO Greg Ortale will welcome the group at the opening reception on Sunday, Feb. 3 at 10 a.m. (George R. Brown Convention Center, Level 3, Hall B3)
· The expo, Monday, Feb. 4, 11:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m., will feature booths from a variety of global destinations, airlines, hotels, restaurants and more. (George R. Brown Convention, Level 3, Hall A3)

MORE: Social responsibility is a major part of this convention. “Green” features of the convention include:

· Welcome letter to each attendee from CEO Greg Ortale on a cookie, which saves 2,000 pieces of paper

· All inventory is rented, so it will be reused after the event

· Events are decorated with plants and flowers

· Cork buffet tops and serving trays

· AV presentation will educate about the environment

· Digital LED signage instead of printed signs

· Shuttle buses will use ultra-low sulphur diesel fuel, which enables the use of cleaner technology diesel engines and vehicles, resulting in significantly improved air quality.

· The City of Houston Energy Management is going to purchase Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) in the name of MPI for the energy consumed during PEC-NA at the George R. Brown Convention Center. The RECs will be retired in MPI's name.

· The registration bags, lanyards and airport greeter T-shirts are made from organic cotton, which supports sustainable agriculture.

INTERVIEWS: Bruce MacMillan, MPI president, and Angie Pfeifer, MPI chairman, are available for interviews on Sunday, Feb. 3, 1-2 pm in the MPI press room at the George R. Brown. Please schedule interviews in advance with Bob Tess at (972) 804-6668.

Greg Ortale, GHCVB CEO, is available for interviews at any time during the convention. Please call Lindsey Brown to schedule – (713) 437-5275 (office) or (713) 202-5685 (cell).
