For the month of April, the Greater Houston Convention and Visitors Bureau (GHCVB) welcomes 22 conventions, trade shows, events and other meetings to the city. More than 30,520 attendees will spend an estimated $29.7 million in Houston during this month. The following are some of April’s largest conventions:

Mary Kay Inc. – Career Conference
Mary Kay’s Career Conference, held April 4-5 at George R. Brown Convention Center, provides the leadership skills, inspiration and positive reinforcement that help women become their best. The annual event is one of about 50 regional events that are held in cities across the country to educate sales consultants about products, sales techniques and company plans. Mary Kay Inc. also awards the top beauty consultants prizes ranging from jewelry to the company's trademark pink Cadillac. The number two direct seller of beauty products in the U.S., Mary Kay offers more than 200 items in over 30 countries. This conference is expected to attract more than 2,000 attendees, with an economic impact of approximately $1.9 million.

Austin Juniors Volleyball – Mizuno Lone Star Classic
Austin Juniors Volleyball (AJV) will hold their 2008 Mizuno Lone Star Classic national qualifier April 11-13 at Reliant Park. Austin Junior Volleyball is a non-profit girl’s volleyball club that serves as a vehicle for young athletes to improve their skills in hopes of being recruited and receiving college athletic scholarships. AJV runs several nationally recognized tournaments each spring, one of which is the Lone Star Classic. The Lone Star Classic is the largest qualifier in the nation and is the largest girls’ volleyball event in the world. The tournament has continued to grow in size and strength of competition since its inception in 1988. Last year, the tournament broke the 1,200 team record mark with more than 1,230 teams competing. During this year’s tournament, Select Division will be offered for the second year at the Mizuno Lone Star Classic. The Select division is designed to allow clubs or teams to be competitive all three days while participating at a National Qualifier and is for teams who are not interested in earning a bid to the Junior Olympics. More than 20,000 delegates are expected to attend, which will bring approximately $19.4 million to the local economy.

The Turbo Machinery Laboratory – International Pump Users Symposium & Short Courses
The International Pump Users Symposium & Short Courses will be held April 21-24 at the George R. Brown Convention Center. This prestigious event includes a full-range of conference and discussion sessions, short courses and technical sessions as well as a trade show emphasizing the technology that pumping equipment users need. This biennial event promotes professional development, technology transfer, peer networking and information exchange among industry professionals. The technical sessions provide an opportunity for attendees to select those lectures, tutorials and case studies that best meet their personal and professional needs and interests. Short Courses give attendees working knowledge on specific subjects with full-day hands-on workshops so they can immediately apply this new knowledge in the workplace. The exhibit hall features products from many key companies in the industry and lets attendees get knowledgeable help from company’s "first-team" players. More than 2,000 people are expected to attend, with an economic impact of approximately $1.9 million.
