Twenty conventions, trade shows, events and other meetings, booked by the Greater Houston Convention and Visitors Bureau (GHCVB), will be held in Houston for the month of June. More than 48,470 attendees will spend an estimated $47.2 million in Houston during this month. The following are some of June’s largest conventions:

American Wind Energy Association – WINDPOWER 2008 Conference & Exhibition
American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) will hold their WINDPOWER Conference & Exhibition June 1-4 at the George R. Brown Convention Center. WINDPOWER 2008 is one of the world’s largest wind energy industry events, with three days of conference sessions, an interactive tradeshow of wind energy products and services and numerous networking opportunities among leaders in all facets of the wind industry. Attendees will learn about industry successes as well as what actions are required to solidify wind energy’s critical position in the U.S. energy mix. WINDPOWER 2008’s exhibitors, including turbine manufacturers, component manufacturers, meteorologists, materials manufacturers, project developers and many more, will fill the spectacular exhibition hall with a full array of products and service demonstrations. The hall will host several large wind turbine components, and two 70-meter-long turbine blades will be displayed outdoors on Discovery Green, located right across the street from the George R. Brown Convention Center. The WINDPOWER conference program, “Wind: Thriving at the Epicenter of Energy,” will feature keynote speakers, including The Honorable Rick Perry, Governor of Texas and the Honorable Bill White, Mayor of Houston, in addition to 300 speakers and moderators, 150 poster presentations and more than 50 sessions addressing topics organized into six daily “tracks”: Finance, Wind Power Growth, Resource Assessment, Policy, Key Issues and Wind at the Epicenter. More than 7,500 attendees are expected, with an economic impact of $7.3 million.

Republican Party of Texas – State Convention
The Republican Party of Texas will hold their 2008 State Convention June 12-14 at the George R. Brown Convention Center. This convention is the nation’s largest political convention and is held every June of even-numbered years. The business conducted at the state convention will be to elect a Chairman and Vice-Chairman of the Republican Party of Texas, elect one male and one female member each senatorial district to the State Republican Executive Committee and adopt a state party platform. More than participating in the formal convention business, though, the convention is a great networking opportunity. Delegates will come into contact with statewide officeholders, senators, congressmen, legislators, county officials, party leaders, as well as candidates for those offices. More than 15,800 people are expected to attend, with an economic impact of approximately $15.3 million.

Bo’s Place– 2008 Symposium
Bo’s Place will hold their 12th Annual National Symposium of Children’s Grief Support June 19-21 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel Houston-Downtown. The mission of the Symposium is to provide a national forum for those who serve grieving children and their families, and to offer educational resources and networking opportunities in a dynamic, collaborative and supportive atmosphere. Four keynote speakers will address the Symposium: Dorothy S. Becvar, Ph.D., L.C.S.W., L.M.F.T., Paula D’Arcy, M.Ed., Maria Trozzi, M.Ed., and J. William Worden, PhD., ABPP. Paula D’Arcy, M.Ed. is the author of several books, including the best-selling Song for Sarah: A Young Woman’s Journey through Grief and Beyond, and is also a nationally recognized speaker on grief as well as retreat master. The symposium will offer a variety of learning experiences, and a time to meet others in the professional and volunteer communities who are interested in helping grieving children and their families. Workshops will be offered Thursday afternoon, Friday morning and afternoon and Saturday morning. More than 300 attendees are expected, with an economic impact of approximately $292,000.

Texas Restaurant Association – Southwest Food Service Expo
The Texas Restaurant Association’s 2008 Southwest Foodservice Expo will be held June 22-24 at the George R. Brown Convention Center. As the largest foodservice trade show in the Southwest, Expo boasts more than 1,000 booths and is the only show where foodservice professionals have the opportunity to see all of the products and services available to help them run their businesses under one roof. This year’s Expo will showcase the latest culinary trends, equipment, products and techniques. During the Expo, attendees will be exposed to the business and education side of the foodservice industry with interactive Idea Centers. Idea Centers will offer attendees dynamic, interactive education sessions ranging from going green and the latest front of the house technologies to sourcing local produce, surviving and economic downturn and 21st century marketing. Attendees will also have networking opportunities with industry leaders at the wide range of events including the opening party, President's Gala, Culinary Showcase Theater and Chef Competitions. John Mariani, columnist for Esquire, Wine Spectator and Diversion, and author of The Encyclopedia of American Food & Drink, The Dictionary of Italian Food and Drink, and, with his wife Galina, the award-winning new Italian-American Cookbook, will be the keynote speaker for this grand event. New at this year’s Expo is the Taste of Italy Pavilion and the Franchise Pavilion in addition to GO TEXAN, Mexico Pavilion and Cafe 21. The Franchise Pavilion will feature exhibitors who have franchises for sale, those that offer consulting services to potential buyers and all the information attendees need to make the final decision to join the ranks of restaurant owners.
