Lightsabers, Lucy, world premieres and art on wheels seem disparate, but they all have one thing in common: Houston. We have compiled a list of the most important and exciting Houston happenings of the next year.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars Exhibit, Space Center Houston*

What to expect
Space Center Houston and Lucasfilm Limited teamed up to create an exhibit of exclusive movie props, models, and artifacts from the upcoming film and TV series Star Wars: The Clone Wars, as well as from previous Star Wars films.

Only in Houston
The exhibit at NASA is a world debut. These artifacts have never been seen by the public, and Space Center Houston is the only place in the world to see them.

You have to see...
Anakin Skywalker's and Obi Wan-Kenobi’s light sabers, a full-sized Starfighter used in Episode II, plus a sneak peek of Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

Lucy’s Legacy: The Hidden Treasures of Ethiopia, Houston Museum of Natural Science*

What to expect
Originally scheduled to end in April, Lucy’s Legacy: The Hidden Treasures of Ethiopia has been extended until September. The exhibit features the famous 3.2 million-year-old hominid fossil, Lucy, as well as Ethiopian artifacts ranging from ancient times to present day.

Only in Houston
The exhibit premiered at the Houston Museum of Natural Science last year. People from as far away as Santiago, Chile and Helsinki, Finland have visited Lucy in Houston to see the famous fossil.

You have to see...
The famous Ethiopian fossil that represents an important step in human evolution.

Darfur: Photojournalists Respond, Holocaust Museum Houston

What to expect
Holocaust Museum Houston was established so that the world would never forget the atrocities of genocide, but terrible injustice occurs daily in Darfur. Eight photojournalists recorded some of these myriad events, and their photographs are now on display at Holocaust Museum Houston.

This exhibit made its world premiere at Holocaust Museum Houston.

Poignant portraits of injustice shot from 1988 until the present decade.

Titus Andronicus, Dominic Walsh Dance Theater

What to expect
Contemporary ballet company Dominic Walsh Dance Theater will kick off its 2008-2009 season run at the Hobby Center with the chilling world premiere of Dominic Walsh’s Titus Andronicus. Walsh offers an unsettling abstract take on Shakespeare’s revenge tragedy.

Titus Andronicus will break new ground with original choreography by Dominic Walsh and an original score by Two Star Symphony.

Former Houston Ballet principal dancer Dominic Walsh, founder of this innovative contemporary ballet company. Experience its fusion of classical training and contemporary choreography.

Bayou City Art Festival Downtown

What to expect
Houston's downtown skyline is the dramatic backdrop for juried fine art, multicultural music and dance, and interactive art at this nationally-ranked art festival. The juried fine art event boasts 300 artists representing 19 art media from throughout the U.S. and the world.

Only in Houston
The City of Houston closes downtown streets to vehicular traffic, transforming the urban canyon into a stress-free outdoor art gallery geared toward the entire family.

You have to see…
The floating art exhibit in City Hall’s reflection pool, an interactive Creative Zone with free art projects and activities for children, the Houston Arts Alliance performance stage, and more.

Max Ernst in the Garden of Nymph Ancolie, The Menil Collection

What to expect
This exhibition at the Menil showcases work by surrealist Max Ernst, focusing on his mural Pétales et jardin de la nymphe Ancolie. Accompanying the mural will be important and rarely exhibited paintings, drawings, and sculptures by Ernst from the early 1930s to the late 1940s.

Only in Houston
Pétales et jardin de la nymphe Ancolie is the only existing mural by Ernst that has survived in its entirety, and The Menil Collection will be the first venue to exhibit the mural in its fully restored condition.

You have to see…
The Menil itself. Arts writer Philip Lopate praised the museum when he wrote, “There is nothing else like the Menil in America” in The New York Times Magazine.

The 9th Annual Latin Grammy® Awards, representing the height of achievement in Latin music recording, will be broadcast live from Houston’s Toyota Center.

You: The Exhibit, The Health Museum*

What to expect
The Health Museum’s permanent exhibition invites visitors to explore their physical, mental, and future selves through an array of sophisticated media and technology.

Only in Houston
At the nation’s only interactive health science center, the Global View lets visitors experience how living in Houston compares to living in other cities.

You have to see…
The Mirror of Heredity, which shows how your physical traits differ from those of other visitors, and the Age-O-Matic, which uses computer imaging to show you how you will look in thirty years factoring in habits like smoking, overeating, and more.

When to come
This is a new permanent exhibit, so any time is a good time to come. There’s free general admission on Thursdays 2-7pm.

Hearts Afire Weekend, Houston Center for Contemporary Craft

What to expect
The Houston Center for Contemporary Craft brings Houston a blazing weekend celebrating the art of glass, featuring glass exhibitions, live hot glass demonstrations, a fabulous party and live auction, and much more.

Only in Houston
Hot Glass, Cool Collections showcases fantastic glass art from the homes of Houston collectors. Works on view represent the many styles and techniques of contemporary studio glass and include pieces by world-renowned artists, such as Dale Chihuly, Dante Marioni and Michael Schunke.

You have to see…
Three of America’s most celebrated glass artists demonstrate lampwork on the torch. See these amazing artists transform glass rods into molten glass to create beautiful pieces of art.

When to come
Feb. 21-22, 2009 for Hearts Afire Weekend. Hot Glass, Cool Collections and Environments: Form + Space is on view Dec. 13, 2008-March 15, 2009.

Afghanistan: Hidden Treasures from the National Museum, Kabul, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston*

What to expect
This landmark exhibition presents nearly 230 extraordinary archaeological treasures from the National Museum of Afghanistan in Kabul, many of which were lost for decades.

Most of these extraordinary artifacts are on view for the first time in the United States, and the MFAH is the only place to view the treasures in this region.

Gold objects from the famed Bactrian hoard, a 2,000-year-old treasure cache discovered in 1978 but hidden from view until 2003.

Marie, Houston Ballet

Children’s Museum of Houston* Expansion

What to expect
The Children’s Museum of Houston will be bigger and better than ever when its expansion project is completed March 14, 2009. Six brand new, state-of-the-art exhibits will complement the existing 14 action-packed ones.

CMH is consistently ranked as one the top two children's museums in the country...and now that it’s got even more, it will remain the leader as the place where children learn as they play.

You have to see…
Kidtropolis, USA takes special debit cards for kids to spend money, but once they use it all, they have to get jobs to earn back what they spent. Also check out PowerPlay: this three-story exhibit looks more like an avant-garde art installation than an exhibit where kids leap up and down different levels.

When to come
All new exhibits will be completely functioning March 14, 2009, but the first one, FlowWorks, will splash into town fall 2008.

Brief Encounter, Houston Grand Opera
