Twenty conventions, trade shows, events and other meetings, booked by the Greater Houston Convention and Visitors Bureau (GHCVB), will be held in Houston for the month of January. More than 22,290 attendees will spend an estimated $21.7 million in Houston during this month. The following are some of January’s largest conventions:

Americas Classic – Swing Dance Championships
Americas Classic will hold its 18th Annual Swing Dance Championships Jan. 15-18 at the Hilton North Houston Hotel. The top swing dancers in the country attend this prestigious event every year where they perform their exciting swing-inspired routines for judges and dedicated fans. The Classic will also feature $30,000 in cash and prizes, awards, dance workshops, midnight breakfast buffets and plenty of late-night dancing. More than 1,000 delegates are expected to attend, with an economic impact of approximately $974,000.

Chevron Houston Marathon – Chevron Houston Marathon, Aramco Houston Half Marathon and EP5K
The Chevron Houston Marathon will hold its annual 26.2, 13.1, and 3.1 mile run in downtown Houston on January 18. The Chevron Houston Marathon, a Running USA founding member, is the nation’s premier winter marathon, annually attracting participants from all 50 U.S. states and more than 30 countries. The Marathon offers the only closed marathon course in Texas and is ranked among the top five in the nation by the Ultimate Guide to Marathons for fastest course, organization and crowd support. More than 200,000 spectators line the course and 5,000 volunteers help organize the race each year. This year, participants and spectators can also attend the Memorial Hermann Sports Medicine Expo on Friday and Saturday of marathon weekend. The Expo is a free, two-day sports and fitness exhibition held at the George R. Brown Convention Center and features exhibitors displaying and selling the latest in health and fitness products and services, as well as numerous health and running related seminars. More than 10,000 out-of-town participants and visitors are expected to attend the Chevron Houston Marathon, which will bring approximately $9.74 million to the local economy.

Halloween and Party Expo – H&P Expo
The 2009 Halloween & Party Expo will take place Jan. 24-27 at the George R. Brown Convention Center. The 2009 Expo connects a global audience of serious buyers and sellers of Halloween and party products and accessories. Thousands of retailers, spanning from single stores to mass market domestic and international chains, will come to Expo to view the latest industry products and services. In addition to providing a great place for buyers and exhibitors to do business and write orders, Expo will also host several special events. These events include: Rubies’ Annual Halloween Bash on Sunday, Jan. 25; a Halloween style show on Saturday, Jan. 24; an industry party hosted by Paper and Party Retailer on Friday, Jan. 23. The annual meetings for the nation’s largest party buying groups, Paper First Affiliate and Party Club of America, will also be held in conjunction with the Expo. Paper First Affiliates will be conducting their annual meeting prior to the show at the Hilton Amercias Hotel, while Party Club of America will hold their meeting at the Four Seasons over the same dates. More than 3,000 attendees are expected to attend, with an economic impact of $2.9 million.
