May Convention Business Brings $96.5 Million to Houston

Thirteen conventions, trade shows, events and other meetings, booked by the Greater Houston Convention and Visitors Bureau (GHCVB), will be held in Houston for the month of May. More than 99,150 attendees will spend an estimated $96.5 million in Houston during this month. The following are some of May's largest conventions:

Nano Science and Technology Institute -- Nanotech Conference & Expo
The 2009 Nanotech Conference & Expo will take place May 3-7 at the George R. Brown Convention Center. Nanotech is the world's largest and most anticipated annual nanotechnology conference and expo. Unlike single-discipline events, Nanotech brings together specialists from a wide range of fields of science, technology and business. Attendees will include business executives, venture capitalists, politicians, scientists and researchers from 67 countries. More than 250 companies, organizations and international pavilions will be exhibiting at the Nanotech Expo. Exhibitors will include equipment manufacturers and suppliers, systems providers, finance and investment firms, R&D companies, project developers, trade associations and government agencies. In addition to the products and services on exhibit, attendees will have access to valuable content, including keynote presentations, product demonstrations and educational sessions from today's industry leaders. Keynote and plenary speakers include: Larry Kellner, Chairman and CEO of Continental Airlines Inc.; Ray O. Johnson, Chief Technology Officer of Lockheed Martin Corporation; Dan Arvizu, Director of U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory; and John Mendelsohn, President of The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. More than 4,000 attendees are expected, with an estimated economic impact of $3.89 million.

Offshore Technology Conference -- Annual Convention & Exposition
The Offshore Technology Conference (OTC), the world's largest offshore event, will be held May 4-7 at Reliant Park. Marking the 40th anniversary since it was founded in 1969, OTC is the world's foremost event for the development of offshore resources in the fields of drilling, exploration, production and environmental protection. Energy professionals from 110 countries will meet in Houston to learn about the latest technology for finding and producing offshore oil and natural gas resources. OTC 2009 will feature more than 300 presentations covering the latest and most important topics, technologies and innovations in today's exploration and production industry. More than 75,000 attendees are expected, bringing an estimated $73 million to the local economy.

New at OTC 2009:
Executive Roundtable: The Case for Access to Oil and Gas Resources on the US Outer Continental Shelf
Speakers will discuss the case for access to the US OCS and will offer their views on the challenges and benefits for developing these resources in the future.
Panelists include: Larry Nichols, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Devon Energy Corporation;Gary P. Luquette President, Chevron North America Exploration and Production Company; Tim Cejka, President, ExxonMobil Exploration Company; and Karen A. Harbert, President and CEO, Institute for 2lst Century Energy, US Chamber of Commerce.

Artic Breakfast: Artic Challenges
This presentation will focus on the key concerns that companies face in dealing with exploration and development opportunities in the Arctic.

KeMaKo, Inc -- Best of the Best Martial Arts Competition
KeMaKo, Inc. will hold their Best of The Best Martial Arts Competition May 29-31 at the George R. Brown Convention Center. Best of the Best 2009 is KeMaKo, Inc.'s first annual tournament in which 25, $10,000 college scholarships will be awarded to participants. In the past, the Martial Arts community has lost many great martial artists to other sports because the sport has not been given the respect and recognition that it deserves. The purpose behind this competition is to give martial artists a platform where they can realize their dreams and goals. More than 17,000 participants are expected to attend, which will bring approximately $16.5 million to the local economy.
