This new vegetarian-vegan spot on W. Alabama is a welcome addition for Houstonians and visitors who don't eat meat.

Field of Green's sprightly salad dressings, good daily soups and several of their sandwiches promise to give the place a modest level of crossover appeal.

Hard surfaces, Styrofoam cups and a noontide glare through the storefront's glass window walls all felt softer once the sage-green walls and piped-in jazz smoothed off the edges. The cheery ministrations of a flamboyantly shod redhead--manager, cashier and sole server--injected a note of liveliness into the earnest surroundings.

Field of Green's is owned by two longtime vegetarian chefs who ran other Houston restaurants, Soya Cafe and A Moveable Feast. In fact, the Field of Green's location formerly housed Ziggy's Healthy Grill, which now occupies the erstwhile Moveable Feast site right down Alabama.

Field of Green's bills itself as Houston's only American vegetarian restaurant.
