Houston Grand Opera is the only opera company in the world to win a Tony, two Grammy and two Emmy Awards. The New York Times calls the Houston Grand Opera "the jewel in the cultural crown."

Houston Grand Opera (HGO) is internationally renowned for its unique, delicately balanced approach to programming. The company is committed to the commissioning and performing of new works (35 world premieres in 53 years), the development and nurturing of American artists and composers, the imaginative presentation of masterpieces from the traditional operatic repertoire and to reaching out to new audiences with such productions as Porgy and Bess, Treemonisha, Harvey Milk, Frida, Florencia en el Amazonas, The Little Prince and Jackie O. HGO tours extensively, having brought productions to Japan, Italy, Egypt, Scotland and France.

Founded in 1955 through the joint efforts of Maestro Walter Herbert and Houston cultural leader Mrs. Louis G. Lobit, Houston Grand Opera flourished under the acclaimed leadership of General Director David Gockley from 1972 to 2005. Anthony Freud, the esteemed head of Welsh National Opera, begins his tenure at HGO's third general director in early 2006.

Houston Grand Opera performs in the Wortham Theater Center.

The Houston Grand Opera is working on a spectacular new world premier Opera entitled THE REFUGE. This opera is more than a year in the making and is a result of countless number of interviews with Houston residents that have made the the journey from foreign countries to call Houston home. The work will be performed by Studio soloists, the HGO chorus, the HGO children's chorus and groups from the ethnic communities that were interviewed. The opera will premier on November 10th for one show only at 7:30PM at the Wortham Center and will definately not be something you will want to miss.
