Museum District Things To Do

Visiting museums is the obvious thing to do in the Museum District and you’ll have a lot to choose from when it comes to planning your itinerary in the neighborhood. Looking to go easy on your wallet? Museums such as The Menil Collection, Rice University’s Moody Center for the Arts, the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, and Asia Society (except the Louisa Stude Sarofim Gallery), are always free.

The Museum of Fine Arts houses one of the largest art collections in the country spanning more than 6,000 years. Make sure to visit the museum’s newest building, the Nancy and Rich Kinder Building, an architectural gem that is dedicated to the museum’s international collections of modern and contemporary art. Or take a walk through the Cullen Sculpture Garden, a peaceful oasis where visitors can view sculptures from 20th and 21st century artists.

The list of museums is long but if science is more your thing, it’s worth mentioning the Houston Museum of Natural Science and its Cockrell Butterfly Center as a destination.

Outdoor spaces abound in the Museum District, so if you grow tired of museums, take a walk around Hermann Park and its various gardens, feed the giraffes at the Houston Zoo – a popular Houston destination for families – or catch a free show at Miller Outdoor Theatre.
