  • overview

Afrooz (Baran Kosari, I’m Not Angry!) is the captain of the Iran Futsal (women’s) National Team, whose long-sought dream of playing in the Asian Nations Cup has come true after years of hard work. As she and her team prepare to fly to Malaysia for the final, Afrooz learns that her estranged TV-host husband has banned her from leaving the country. The inspiring contemporary drama from the director of I/Me (2016) showcases the fight for female civil rights, hints at a same-sex partnership, and portrays the humiliation that submission often brings, while simultaneously offering a message of self-preservation and optimism. Followed by Driving Lessons (directed by Marziyeh Riahi, Iran, 13 min., in Farsi with English subtitles), from the 2019 Manhattan Short Film Festival about a man who accompanies his wife to her driving lessons so she and her instructor will not be alone, a task made more complicated when the two men don’t get along.
