The Waggoners Foundation Speaker Series was created in memory of June and Virgil Waggoner’s son Jay, who died of alcoholism at the young age of 36. Since 1999, this charity event has gained national recognition and the Spring Luncheon is one of the largest philanthropic gatherings in Houston. Since its inception, the Waggoners Foundation Speaker Series has been promoting a healthy, addiction-free lifestyle and the benefits it brings to the entire community. The Spring and Fall Luncheons each attract more than 1,000 attendees and raise a combined total of close to $1,000,000 each year to directly fund The Council’s many programs that help individuals and families affected by alcoholism, drug abuse, other addictions, and co-occurring mental health disorders. As these rising problems continue to affect our community, governmental funding of prevention and treatment programs is steadily declining. The Council's efforts to fill this critical service gap have made our fundraising needs more important than ever, especially since we turn no one away.
