Everyone Has Everything in Them: Creating Complex Characters with Matthew Hefti
It’s said that the best characters are those with a flaw, but what does this mean in practice? It’s rare that we can give a character a single, likeable flaw, like clumsiness or a proclivity for profanity, and call it a day. Rather, the best characters are those who, like real-life humans, contain multitudes. In this workshop, we’ll take a deep dive into characterization and writing full, complex characters. What distinguishes a sinner from a saint? A hero from a villain? And in good fiction, how clear-cut are those labels anyway? We’ll step away from writing solely from our own experiences and examine the thoughts, actions, and histories of characters whose lives and ethics may seem completely alien to our own.
