Houston Botanic Garden and Open Dance Project present Flutter: The Monarch Butterfly Project at the Susan Garver Family Discovery Garden for two evenings only, Saturday, September 30 and Sunday, October 1 from 4 to 7 p.m.

This family-friendly event will celebrate and highlight the approximately 3,000-mile southward migration of monarch butterflies that pass through Texas each fall. As guests explore the Susan Garver Family Discovery Garden and discover three butterfly installations by local sculptor Meredith Tucker, which the Botanic Garden added to its permanent art collection. The Open Dance Project company will present a series of three immersive, half-hour shows of contemporary dance, with interactive costumes by Houston-based artist Natasha Bowdoin.

Flutter brings the theatrical approach of the Open Dance Project outdoors. The company tackles the natural phenomenon of the monarch migration with their trademark athleticism and soulful wit. In addition to responding to the natural and architectural setting of the garden and Tucker's sculptures which depict three different species of butterflies, the performance incorporates painted textiles and artistic accessories made by Bowdoin, whose work investigates and reinvents humanity's relationship with the natural world.

Tickets go on sale from August 25 on the Botanical Garden website.
