Discovery Green hosts House of Cards CAR-nival, an art benefit preview presented by Bracewell on Thursday, Aug. 27 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. The socially-distanced drive-thru CAR-nival will celebrate the unveiling of Discovery Green Conservancy’s newest public art installation, House of Cards. During a pre-selected time-slot, ticket holders will drive around and through Discovery Green, immersed in a carnival experience with performers, desserts and music before getting a first look at House of Cards. Tickets for the CAR-nival are sold out, but for a $500 contribution to the park, donors’ names will be included in a mural painted by Houston artist Nicky Davis that will remain on display for the duration of the House of Cards installation.
House of Cards, which will open to the public on Aug. 28, consists of 126 oversized playing cards, each featuring an original piece of artwork, including 20 designed by local artists. Each individual card is an ultra-slim, double-sided light box featuring an original piece of artwork. During the day, the cards’ crisp white lines and colorful images will dazzle; at night, the structure will be animated to create the illusion of the house of cards rising and falling. Variations of the House of Cards installation have been exhibited around the world, displaying designs that correspond to the local environment. House of Cards presented by Bracewell will be on view at the park’s Sarofim Picnic Lawn through Oct. 11, 2020. To ensure social distancing for viewers, reservations will be available on the Discovery Green website in the coming weeks.
