IIDA Houston City Center’s Product Runway is an impressive display of our industry’s talent that never ceases to amaze. The competing teams consist of designers, architects, and students from Houston’s design firms and schools. Product Runway challenges participants to channel their design experience to create hand-made runway garments, using materials provided by their garment labels. Product Runway proudly benefits the Houston Furniture Bank and TAID: an advocacy group that addresses legislative issues which affect the business of interior design in Texas. This year marks the 11th Annual IIDA Product Runway. The aftermath of Hurricane Harvey brought the city of Houston together in an inspiring way and the theme of this year’s IIDA Product Runway will honor our wonderful city. Houston is the 4th largest city - growing quickly to take the number 3 spot (Chicago we are coming for you!). We have a cultural vibrancy, diversity, and uniqueness that rivals some of the top cities in the world. Design teams will be assigned a notable Houston destination (building or landmark) to use as their basis of design inspiration. The themes range from buildings, parks, and attractions from which designers can derive color, texture, pattern, and scale inspiration – just to name a few! Teams are encouraged to work with their garment label representatives to select materials that will best reflect their particular Houston location. Teams also have the option to modify the color of their hard and/or soft goods by method of paint, dying, etc. Within the portfolio submissions, each team will be asked to describe how their garment’s design relates, interprets, and pays homage to their assigned Houston attraction. The team’s assigned Houston destination, or any significant imagery will be shown within portfolios, as well as on display screens during the model’s runway walk during the show.
