Dr. José-Miguel Yamal is a Chilean-American jazz pianist with a repertoire as deep and eclectic as his love of all rhythmic and soulful music. Influenced by the diversity in Houston, his musical voice draws from many genres, including straight-ahead jazz, jazz latino (with a focus on Afro-Cuban and Brazilian), Neo soul, funk and more. He has performed with many great musicians and collaborated with salsa singers Ruben Blades, Ismael Miranda and more. About Jazzy Sundays in the ParksDiscovery Green Conservancy, DACAMERA, Buffalo Bayou Partnership and Emancipation Park Conservancy are teaming up this fall to celebrate the legacy and evolution of jazz in Houston with Jazzy Sundays in the Parks, a live music series made possible by the Kinder Foundation. The series features free, family-friendly concerts every Sunday in September at Emancipation Park, every Sunday in October at Discovery Green and every Sunday in November at The Water Works in Buffalo Bayou Park. The complete series lineup can be found at Each concert will be preceded by a free workshop at 3 p.m. where kids can learn about music and instruments presented by Sam Dinkins Dinky Drum Company. A bonus Series Spectacular concert will be headlined by acclaimed American gospel and R&B singer and civil rights activist Mavis Staples with an opening performance by rising star and Kinder HSPVA graduate, Marcos Varela will be held at Discovery Green on Friday, October 15.
