It is Christmas Eve in the freezing garret of four poverty-stricken young bohemians: Rodolfo, Marcello, Colline and Schaunard. They decide to take their holiday meal at the Café Momus in the Latin Quarter, and all depart except Rodolfo, who remains behind to finish some work. Mimì, a young neighbor who is obviously ill, knocks at the door—her candle has gone out and she wishes to relight it. Rodolfo and Mimì fall instantly in love.
Love is not enough to keep Rodolfo and Mimì together, however; they are eventually driven apart by jealousy and his guilt over their living conditions, which have worsened Mimì’s illness. Rodolfo and Marcello are working in their garret when Marcello’s former lover Musetta enters with Mimì, now near death. Rodolfo stays with Mimì while the others go to buy needed items and to summon a doctor. Reminiscing about their love, Mimì dies in Rodolfo’s arms.
