Prepare yourself for a wild, bloody, political-poetical ride when The Alta Arts launches the premier Texas production of Massacre: Sing to Your Children, a play by Oscar-nominated, Puerto-Rican born American playwright José Rivera, best known for his screenplay The Motorcycle Diaries about Che Guevara.
This supernatural, moral and perhaps religious allegory may be set in small-town New Hampshire, but you’ll question whether you’ve landed smack down in a dictator-riven Central American state. Although the playwright’s Latin American power themes are evident, the complex dynamics of perception and fear will be frighteningly familiar to any audience.
The seven performances run from June 24th through July 3rd, 2022. Massacre: Sing to Your Children will make you wonder just how extreme and brutal we all may become in the process of revolting against oppressors. The play follows eight “average” previously non-violent folks in the small town of Granville who have just committed a gruesome act.
As the New York Times said in their 2012 review of Rattlesnake Theater’s revival, Massacre is a place where “Greek tragedy, magic realism and pulpy horror movie conventions collide.” Texas Native, Edgar Guajardo, a fixture in the Houston theater community, is thrilled to give the tale his spin as director. Guajardo serves as Technical Director for Opera in the Heights as well as Production Manager for The Deluxe Theater in the Fifth Ward district. Originally staged in development at LAByrinth (Latino Actors Base) Theater Company in 2005, this production marks the first time the play is performed in Texas. Guajardo describes Rivera’s story as “hitting a raw nerve during our divisive social climate”.
The Alta Arts is a non-profit interdisciplinary Arts center in the Gulfton/Bellaire neighborhood of Houston, located at 5412 Ashbrook Drive. Massacre is Alta’s first foray into theater production. Showtimes and tickets are available through our website, www.thealtaarts.org.
