Former U.S. Representative Patrick Kennedy to speak at Menninger Clinic Annual Luncheon during Mental Health Awareness MonthKennedy, to discuss his personal recovery journey and his advocacy work for mental health equity in the U.S. WHO: A member of America's most famous political family, Patrick Kennedy crashed his car into a barricade on Capitol Hill in 2006. He subsequently issued a public statement detailing his struggle with mental illness, including bipolar disorder and addiction to alcohol and prescription drugs. After emerging from rehab, Patrick, who is the son of the late Senator Ted Kennedy, would be a key figure in securing passage of the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act of 2008. In his 2015 memoir, "A Common Struggle: A Personal Journey through the Past and Future of Mental Illness and Addiction," Patrick talks openly about his experience, his decision to speak publicly about mental illness and the consequences of his actions.Patrick Kennedy has become an outspoken mental health advocate and will discuss his views on mental health equity at this event. Patrick believes that illnesses of the brain should be treated no differently than illnesses of the body when it comes to our health care system, insurance coverage, public policy, etc. Kennedy hopes to advance evidence-based practices, policies, and programming for the treatment of mental health and addiction—and shine a spotlight on the people who are out there making a difference.WHAT: The goal of the Menninger’s Annual Signature Luncheon is to bring crucial conversations about mental health to the forefront during National Mental Health Awareness Month.WHY: Proceeds from the luncheon will benefit the work of Menninger, a premier mental health care system that is known for its expert team-based diagnostic assessments and treatment.
