Join us for MECA's Blessing of the Altars Celebration on Friday, October 25, 2019! The Blessing of the Altars will be the opening event to the Ofrendas Altar Exhibit, curated by Luis Gavito. Each year, MECA invites members of the community to build an altar (Ofrenda) featuring photographs and personal belongings of their loved ones who have passed away. Inspired by Mexican tradition and culture, some of the altars also include the Cempasúchil (Mexican Marigold), whose golden petals and fragrant scent are believed to guide the dead from and on their way to the afterlife. 2019 Blessing of the Altars Celebration Friday, October 25, 2019 | 7-9PM Location: 1900 Kane Street Houston, Texas 77007 Inspired by Nahua and Catholic blessing rituals, the altars will be blessed during this ceremony with copal incense and holy water and prayers will be said for our ancestors who are memorialized in the constructed altars. This community event is FREE and refreshments will be served. 2019 Ofrendas Altar Exhibit We invite the community to stop by MECA to view the Ofrendas Altar Exhibit between the hours of 10AM-7PM from October 25 - November 21, 2019.
