MYSTIC LYON and PRINTMATTERS are thrilled to present two new public art installations on Lyons Avenue in Houston's historic Fifth Ward by artists Siver Black and Kelly Moran. Both artists' works were selected from proposals from members of PrinterMatters. The installations will remain on view outside from May 4 through July 20, 2019 with a reception at Mystic Lyon, 5017 Lyons Avenue, Houston, TX 77020 on Saturday, May 4 from 5-7pm. Siver Black's print installation, "Nickel Views," includes multiple hand drawn images of the Fifth Ward brought together in a large mix. From the artist (edited): My art at Mystic Lyon combines my love of urban sketching with woodcut printmaking. I began by using Lyons Avenue for my inspiration and starting point, making drawings of the neighborhood on location, from Des Chaumes to Lockwood. These sketches feature buildings as well as people with the intent of capturing a sense of place. Some of the places I have drawn are churches, barber shops, the Fifth Ward Jam, De Luxe Theater, the old hospital, Cane River Gardens, and various homes. ABOUT SIVER BLACK:
My work is based in drawing. I carry a sketchbook everywhere. For me the act of drawing on location celebrates a place and what it means to be there in that time. I search for connection through these drawings; drawing a place connects me to that place and drawing a person connects me to that person.
Some of these drawings need to live outside the sketchbook and that is when they become the basis for relief prints. I have a deep fascination for the traditional methods and materials of woodcut printmaking. I am drawn to the feel of the tools cutting through wood, the smell of the ink and the sound it makes while being rolled out, and the graphic punch of black ink.
Kelly Moran's print installation, "Urban Animals," will include images of local bayou critters. From the artist: “I ride my bike on the bayou in Houston and have observed many types of birds that live in this urban habitat. I also have walked in the creeks that are connected to the Bayou and have found some beautiful fish. In my studio practice, I have made some etchings of these magnificent creatures.”
