Untitled #5 (Political Collage), by Catherine Opie will be on view at the Alkek Building along the White Promenade at Discovery Green from September 19 through December 19. The installation is a loan from the Moody Center for the Arts as part of their exhibition, States of Mind: Art and American Democracy.

States of Mind: Art and American Democracy is an exhibition timed to coincide with the 2020 Presidential campaign, featuring artworks that address our current moment, without being didactic or advocating for a single political point of view. Catherine Opie is a highly respected photographer based in LA. She normally makes portraits and landscapes, but after the 2016 election, she began collecting political images from popular media, print magazines and newspapers. She cut them out, then created stop-motion animated collages that slowly scroll upwards on human-sized monitors, meant to evoke smartphones and refer to our screen-driven culture.

Reflecting on some of the most pressing topics facing American democracy, States of Mind: Art and American Democracy encourages dialogue around current social and political issues. Many of the works on view examine the status of our country’s founding principles of freedom and equality, while others engage with questions of voting access, gun control, and immigration policies — three issues that are common throughout the United States and of particular concern to Texas. States of Mind does not attempt to cover the myriad complexities of a democratic government but rather to invite viewers to consider timely yet recurrent questions around these themes. Each artist in States of Mind offers a discrete and potent account of how political issues directly affect our daily lives. By illuminating challenging, often entrenched policies, they seek to foster discourse and propose social change.
