An International celebration of the female creatives.

“The idea for SWAN Day grew out of a collaboration between Martha Richards, the Executive Director of WomenArts, and Jan Lisa Huttner, a film critic who was based in Chicago. Richards had been working to increase the visibility and opportunities of women artists through WomenArts, and Huttner was working with audience members through WITASWAN (Women in the Audiences Supporting Women Artists Now), an informal alliance of women who had pledged to see at least one film every month that is directed or written by a woman, whether it was in a theater or on a DVD.

Huttner invited Richards to speak with her about the challenges of women in film at an American Association of University Women conference in Bloomington, IL in April 2007. (For pictures of this historic meeting see www.films42.com/witaswan/martha-richards.asp). The idea for SWAN Day was born during the car ride between Bloomington and Chicago, as Huttner and Richards discussed ways to build more direct connections between women artists of WomenArts and women audience members in WITASWAN. In the car and over a shared pizza dinner, they came up with the idea of SWAN Day as a galvanizing annual event that would serve both artists and audience members.

Richards has publicized SWAN Day through the WomenArts website every year since then, and it has sparked the imaginations of women artists around the world. Over the past ten years, SWAN Day has been celebrated with almost 1,700 events in 36 countries.
