Stanton Welch AM, Artistic Director of Houston Ballet is creating a world premiere ballet Sylvia, set to music by Leo Delibes. The ballet is the story of three women who overcome challenges on their journeys to eternal love. The characters move between the mortal and immortal worlds in costumes and sets that are evocative of Ancient Greece, but with technology and the spirit of the 21st century. Welch is creating two of his three leading characters on Principal Dancer, Karina Gonzalez. Originally from Caracas, Venezuela, Gonzalez received her training from the Gustavo Franklin Ballet School in her hometown. She joined Houston Ballet in 2010 and was promoted to principal dancer in 2013. She has been the inspiration for many world premieres, including Stanton Welch's Romeo & Juliet in 2015. In this production she will alternately play the title role of Sylvia, and the warrior Artemis.Part of Latino Art Now! and the Spring of Latino Art.
