The story was based on a fairy tale written by Božena Němcová (a Bohemian variation of the classic Cinderella fairytale). BACKGROUND INFORMATION The film had its international premiere in East Berlin in 1973 and is until today a popular Christmas holiday film in many European countries. The film has become a holiday classic in several European countries. It is shown on TV around Christmas time every year in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Spain, Norway, Sweden, sometimes in Ukraine and Russia.
