Sometimes when we portray significant moments in stories, we get carried away with the energy of our mental passion, slipping into excessive descriptions of characters, setting, and dialogue and overwhelming our readers in the process. In this workshop, we’ll look at ways to retain both passion and momentum without crushing our readers with the weight of heavy sentences and voluminous scenes that can ruin the joy of great storytelling. We’ll examine works from writers whose descriptions have caused us to yearn, groan, weep and laugh without unwarranted sensationalism, and then look out how we can apply those techniques to our own work. The truth is, we all are guilty of a little literary excess, so what better way to work it out of our writing than with fellow writers in a supportive environment?
