One of Understory’s treasures in Downtown Houston is Mama Ninfa’s Tacos Y Tortas. Serving Mexican street-style tacos, tortas and traditional Tex-Mex fare for breakfast, lunch and dinner, Mama Ninfa’s is a spinoff of The Original Ninfa’s, a Houston Tex-Mex favorite.
The tacos may be self-explanatory, but since some are unfamiliar with a torta, Mama Ninfa’s explains it as taco ingredients sandwiched between fluffy, fresh-made bread. Breakfast tacos are made with scrambled eggs combined with the diner’s choice of brisket, potato, bacon, chorizo, jalapeno, carnitas and cheese. Breakfast tortas are also featured on the menu. For lunch and dinner there are six different tacos and five tortas to choose from, and with choices like grilled red fish, carne asada abodaba and adobo chicken, guests may have trouble choosing. Like any good Tex-Mex stop, Mama Ninfa’s also offers chips and queso, guacamole and salsa.
The small spot serves downtown visitors and speedy business lunches and is ideal for a Tex-Mex quick fix.
