When Washington Avenue’s much-loved live music venue, Walters on Washington, shut its well-worn doors in June 2011, faithful fans weren’t sure how long it would be before they could catch another show, hosted by the more than decade-old music hub.
After constant struggles with parking and noise complaints at the Washington venue, owner Pam Robinson vowed to find a new site that would enhance the guest experience, while not disrupting neighbors. The industry veteran made good on her promise in late 2011, securing a 190-person space in the shadow of the University of Houston-Downtown’s parking garage.
The new live music site offers twice the floor space as the original Walters and boasts a concrete exterior—a soundproofing aid that was absent from the wood-clad Washington Avenue spot. As with before, Walters continues to highlight emerging rock and blues artists, though it continues to emerge as a hotbed for indie-rock acts, too.
