By 2017, Houston’s downtown convention district will be transformed into one of the most dynamic entertainment and hospitality campuses in the country. This new convention district will be the only one in Texas with two headquarter hotels connected to a convention facility.
The section of Avenida de las Americas stretching along the front of the George R. Brown Convention Center is getting a bold makeover that will bring restaurants, nightlife, art and entertainment to the convention district.
Houston First Corporation is overseeing the project that will make the district a new gathering place for locals and leisure travelers as well as convention attendees. At least seven new restaurant concepts will open along Avenida on the ground floor of the GRB itself or in adjacent buildings. What’s more, by narrowing the roadway itself from eight lanes to three, there is now room for a grand pedestrian promenade that will include a major piece of public art, spots for live entertainment, sidewalk dining and more. The promenade will help connect the GRB with the existing Discovery Green park, just across the street.
The infrastructure improvements are slated for completion this fall about the same time the new 1,000-room Marriott Marquis will be complete. The restaurant and entertainment concepts should be open by year-end.
