The International Rugby Board and USA Rugby have awarded Houston a multi-year deal to host the International Rugby Women's Sevens World Series. The 2013 series will feature 12 teams competing at BBVA Compass Stadium Feb. 1 and 2.

The two-day series will see competition between teams from Australia, Canada, England, the Netherlands and the United States among others.

The tournament will happen annually in Houston through 2015, leading up to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, where rugby will debut as a new Olympic sport.

Women's Rugby is one of the fastest-growing team sports in the world. The creation of an international series is a key milestone in the ongoing development of both the competitive standards and the professionalism of the women's game.

"This is a breakthrough moment for women's international rugby, and the USA Eagles.," USA Rugby President Nigel Melville said of the women's team. "As the team prepares for the 2016 Olympics, this series will be instrumental in giving them the competition they need to compete for gold."
