For the second year in a row Houston First Corporation (HFC) and Visit Houston awarded matching grants for tourism-related marketing programs developed by local and regional organizations through the Tourism Marketing Matching Grant Program (MGP). This initiative is part of a larger effort launched in 2015 to increase leisure tourism in the area. The 2016 MGP yielded over 3,000 room nights and an impact of more than $350,000 for Houston and the surrounding area.
The MGP incentivizes partnerships, providing a dollar-for-dollar match in marketing funds. A total of $263,500 was awarded this year to 14 group submissions representing a variety of events, projects and programs. These organizations worked collaboratively with other partners, including a hotel and a non-profit, to create tourism packages that will be marketed to potential visitors outside the region. There were 32 applications for the 2017 Marketing Matching Grant Program, all reviewed by a working group comprised of staff and local industry professionals. The 14 recipients were named at a breakfast awards presentation on January 5th at Houston’s Downtown Aquarium.
