  • Neighborhood:Downtown
  • Phone: (713) 546-0200

Since its inception in 1955, Houston Grand Opera has grown from a small regional organization into an internationally renowned opera company. The company enjoys a reputation for commissioning and producing new works, including 47 world premieres and six American premieres since 1973. The New York Times has called the Houston Grand Opera "the jewel in the cultural crown."

Houston Grand Opera (HGO) has won acclaim for its unique, delicately balanced approach to programming. In addition to commissioning new works, the company is known for the development and nurturing of American artists and composers, the imaginative presentation of masterpieces from the traditional operatic repertoire and for reaching out to new audiences with such productions as Porgy and Bess, Treemonisha, Harvey Milk, Frida, Florencia en el Amazonas, The Little Prince and Jackie O.

In addition to producing and performing world-class opera, HGO contributes to the cultural enrichment of Houston and the nation through a diverse and innovative program of performances, community events, and education projects that reaches the widest possible public. HGO has toured extensively, including trips to Europe and Asia, and it is the only opera company to have won a Tony, two Grammy awards, and two Emmy awards.

Houston Grand Opera performs in the Wortham Theater Center. HGO’s performances are also broadcast nationally and internationally over the WFMT Radio Network, New York City’s WQXR, the European Broadcasting Union and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
