At the corner of Leeland and Dowling, just east of downtown in Houston’s historic Eastwood neighborhood, is a robin’s egg blue clapboard trailer that’s home to the city’s much-loved Sparkle's Hamburger Spot.
It may not be fancy (or even fast for that matter), but it’s a local favorite that continues to serve hungry residents from all over the city. There, regulars wait patiently among benches and picnic tables as Sparkles’ staff skillfully prepares Texas-size fare in the form of jalapeno-cheese-and-hickory-bacon-loaded burgers, pork chops and fried chicken, among other decadent (but delicious) options. Known for serving up some of the best burgers in town, you can get a hearty, flavor filled burger with all the fixings for less than five dollars. You may also want to throw some hand cut fries or onion rings on the side. If you're not in the mood for a burger, try the Chicken and Waffles!
Know before you go: The biz is popular, but the burgers aren’t made until you place your order, so don’t expect fast food service. If you’re in a rush, call ahead. Save room for the spot's old-fashioned, hand mixed malts and shakes made with real ice cream.
