Houston has some of the best bars in the country. Whether it’s a neighborhood dive, downtown speakeasy or a swanky refuge from the daily grind, our city offers up a great variety of watering holes. And in typical Houston fashion, the food at many of these establishments is as good as the drinks. Here is a list of local spots that have food menus as diverse and delicious as a four-star restaurant. Check them out.

Phil & Derek’s

Plenty of people visit Phil & Derek’s for the lively ambiance, live music and trendy atmosphere, but the food there is some of the best. Whether it’s cheese grits and collard greens during weekend brunch or crawfish mac and cheese balls and seafood pasta for dinner, your stomach will thank you later. Be sure to try one of their signature cocktails. King Lemonade is a popular one.

Kulture

Kulture is a popular go-to spot in downtown Houston after work thanks to their great drinks, convenient location and 2-hour free parking, but the food is enough to draw its own crowd. It’s Caribbean-Southern menu includes fare such as their calas and collard dip, rib sandwich, fried fish or corn grit cake. If you’re feel particularly adventurous, try the oxtail ragout.

Ogun Art & Wine Bar

Come for the art and the wine. Stay for the food. You don’t have to be an art expert or sommelier to appreciate the paintings on display and the wide array of vino on the menu at Ogun Art & Wine. But if you’re a foodie, you’ll totally appreciate the great food options at this establishment.

On the menu are half a dozen signature pizzas, include a mushroom and truffle offering. Lamb and beef meatballs, shrimp street tacos and grilled chicken skewers are a few of the small plate items on the menu. They even offer a dessert of the day to satisfy that sweet tooth.

Boheme Café and Wine Bar

A visit to Boheme Café and Wine Bar just makes you feel more cosmopolitan. Between their Cultured Cocktails happy hour (benefiting the arts) and their Friday Night Belly Dancing, you won’t have to travel far for a fun time in Houston. Pair their signature drinks with a few tasty dishes such as the Bombay spinach dip, barbacoa tacos, Cuban sliders or Vietnamese fries. For the health conscious, try Adrienne’s Vegan Pizza.

Taste Bar & Kitchen

Taste Bar & Kitchen offers comfort food at its best by infusing wine, spirits and champagne into traditional Southern dishes. Fried chicken and champagne and jerk lamb chops are just the tip of iceberg. The lobster smoked gouda mac and cheese or the cheeseburger waffle are definitely worth tasting. Don’t leave without wrapping your lips around a forkful of vodka peach cobbler or bourbon pecan pie.

Present Company

Present Company knows how to craft a great cocktail to match its laid back, tropical ambiance. Just as great is its menu of appetizers, burgers, pizzas and tacos. Beer battered green beans, pork belly bites, and parmesan truffle fries are great starters. If you’re a little hungrier, try the buffalo burger, Mexicana pizza or grilled chicken sandwich. Brunch is offered on Saturdays and Sundays, and for night owls, a menu of late night snacks are available from 10 p.m. to 12 midnight.

Better Luck Tomorrow

Better Luck Tomorrow declares its establishment as “a place to drink,” and we couldn’t agree more. There’s no mistaking this bar for anything else, thanks to the great menu of cocktails like Razzle Dazzle (bourbon, rum, brandy) and Valley Girl (vodka). But the food is just as enticing. Order the deluxe hummus or griddled corn to go with a mug of beer. Or try the Party Melt, a beef patty with crispy cheese and caramelized onions. Southern bean stew, beef salad and fried chicken will leave your mouth watering.

Nobi Public House

Take a drive down to the Bay Area to hit up Nobi Public House. In addition to its hundreds of craft beers and extensive wine menu, the Vietnamese fusion cuisine is a great bonus. Stir fry noodles, tofu, pho and wonton soup are just a few items on the menu. Diners will also enjoy Nobi’s take on traditional items such as chicken wings, nachos, tacos and fries. “Porkchop Tuesdays” gives you a bone-in porkchop, choice of rice and a pint of beer for just $7 starting at 4 p.m.

Bosscat Kitchen and Libations

Bosscat is known for its stash of whiskeys from all over the world, but it’s tasty menu items have become just as popular as its drinks. Some fan favorites include the Caroline barbeque salmon, cornbread madeleines, pulled pork hush puppies and… pig candy (rye whiskey caramel, toasted sesame, and kimchi). Before your leave, try the whiskey okra. You’ll thank us later.

Hearsay

Walking into Hearsay is an experience in itself. It’s a walk back in time to the past, with high ceilings and grand chandeliers. And once you see the menu, you’ll want to dine all day. Lamb lollipops, seafood linguini, farmer’s omelet and roasted poblano soup are several flavorful dishes that help you have an exquisite dining experience. The crab cake quattro, Peruvian ceviche, and lobster and vegetable tempura are some of the appetizers on the All Day menu. There is also a menu with only vegetarian items such as the Hearsay Impossible Burger, “faux” meat sliders and pasta primavera, among other offerings.
