Gazebo Roof

The steel gazebo that sits in Root Square Memorial Park provides a base for a rather unique photographic art piece to stand. Located on the corner of Bell and Austin streets across from the Toyota Center, the gazebo holds a photograph of a green leaf on glass on the roof. The piece was designed for the sun to shine through the transparent photograph in order to create a vibrant green hue below the roof in the gazebo. The piece was created by American photographer Ann Stautberg in 2005.

Heritage Lanterns

Located across from the Toyota Center in the northeast corner of Root Memorial Square Park, Heritage Lanterns add an artistic touch to the surrounding landscape. The five stainless steel sculptures are internally lit and feature various Victorian Era-styled "cut-outs." The ornamental spires and tower-like structures of the lanterns are typical of the Victorian style in the 1800s. The lanterns vary in height from five to seven feet. The artists, Carter Ernst and Paul Kittelson, completed work on the lantern sin fall of 2005 and all pieces were commissioned by the City of Houston's Convention & Entertainment Facilities Department that same year.
